Todos & rollover

Todos in Consistent Notes are lines in your entries that start with a checkbox. That’s the whole trick — but what you can build on it is a lot.

Making todos

Type - [ ] and a space, then the todo. Press Return to get the next checkbox automatically.

• - [ ] — an open todo
• - [x] — a done todo
• - [-] — a cancelled todo (dashed strikethrough; it doesn’t count as open or done)

The day’s header shows N ToDo · N ToDone so you can see the shape of the day at a glance (cancelled todos count as neither).

Nesting and cascading

Indent a todo with ⇥ (four spaces per level) to nest it under the one above. Checking a todo checks every todo nested beneath it — clear a whole project by checking its top line. Unchecking a parent does not uncheck its children; re-open only what you mean to.

The ToDos tab

The ToDos tab (⌘T) gathers every open todo across every entry, deduplicated and nested under its parents, with the date it was added to each. Checking a todo from this tab checks it in the entry where it lives. When it’s empty: all caught up.

Rollover — carrying todos forward

Open todos don’t die at midnight. Two ways to carry them into today:

• Automatically — turn on Settings → General → Roll Over Todos and each day’s open todos are copied to the end of today’s entry when you open it.
• When you say so — with the setting off, today’s entry shows a banner when previous days have open todos: N open todos from previous days, with Roll over (⌘R) and View in Todos (⌘T).

Rollover copies todos that are still open, from any previous day, skipping ones already in today’s entry, and keeps their original nesting. Todos you cancelled or completed stay put.

Todos and your stats

Checking todos feeds the heatmap — darker days had more list items — and writing anything at all feeds your streak.
